soil/soul

soil |soil|
-
ORIGIN late Middle English : from Anglo-Norman French, perhaps representing Latin solium ‘seat’ by association with solum ‘ground’

soul - |sōl|
-
ORIGIN Old English sāwol, sāw(e)l, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch ziel and German Seele.

collecting soil from cardiff, June - 2008

This soil is not only from Cardiff, it was collected from the small park which is just next to the Art school that has been my main destination for two years! (By the way, this park includes few tombs placed in a very beautiful way)

It was a sunny day but the weather was hot and cold together I don’t know how! Anyway, the ground looked very hard but the moment I touched it, it turned smooth and offered me some good soil :-)

I grabbed two portions and put them in two different bags, one to be taken with me after two days to Toronto / Canada and be placed there. While the other one is to be sent to Ania at her current place in the Isle of Wight.

So you’re basically moving soil from Cardiff to different locations in the world?

Will you also be bring back soil from Toronto and placing it in Cardiff?

But perhaps my most important question is why?!

Hi there,

Thank you very much for your comment.

The soil is not only being collected from Cardiff and the purpose of the project is much bigger than this. We (hanadi & ania) are doing a work in progress in which we both trying to investigate the meaning of being connected to a ‘homeland’ or a ‘place’ that you have a deep relationship with. However, the first post on this blog "What is soilless / Soulful?" is a description of the project and reading this post will answer your question!!
